Amelie Foumena Nkodo

Amelie (she/they) is a queer, first-generation Cameroonian-American, student physician, geriatric researcher, and educator. She is passionate about the quality of life of older adults with complex healthcare trajectories. Her interest in death studies began as an undergraduate medical anthropology and literature major, during which time she pursued courses that explored the subjective experience of embodiment. Her lived experience, and background in the humanities and social sciences has facilitated an awareness of the diversity of beliefs, rituals, and practices surrounding death and survival.

As a medical student, Amelie has developed coursework and hosted lectures on the topics of anti-racism in medicine and end-of-life care for LGBTQ+ elders. She has volunteered with advocacy and service organizations for LGBTQ+ elders and adults living with HIV. She is committed to a career in geriatric & palliative care in order to encourage discussions about end-of-life preferences early in a patient’s care journey and in communities marginalized by the medical industrial complex.
